NIGERIA: LOCAL BISHOPS, ETHNIC NOT RELIGIOUS CONFLICT
Archbishop of Abuja, Monsignor Jhon Olorunfemi Onaiyekan, speaking on Vatican Radio, explained the recent massacre in Plateau State, Nigeria: "Armed people, wandering herders who follow their cattle, called Fulani, attacked a Berom farming village. It was a classical clash between shepherds and farmers, but it's just that the Fulani are all Muslims and the Berom all Christians." He said that "the victims are poor people who have nothing to do with any of this and who were guilty of nothing." "We are saddened that the government, which should secure the safety of all citizens, seems not to be capable of doing so. It's weak."
